Melghat tiger reserve is located in the Amravati district of Maharashtra in the southern part of Satpura Hills. The southwestern boundary of the resrve comprises of a high ridge that runs east-west with the highest point at Vairat. The area is catchment to the five major rivers namely Khandu, Khapra, Sipna, Gadga and Dolar, all of which are tributaries of the river Tapti that forms the northeastern boundary of the reserve. The forest is Tropical Dry Deciduous in nature, dominated by Teak. The rugger topography of Melghat with only a few entry points offers a natural protection from poachers ad the continuity of forests in the Satpura range guarantees long term conservation potential of the area. Melghat tiger reserve was established as wildlife sanctuary in 1967 and was declared as Tiger reserve in 1974 with the core area of the Reserve, the Gugarnal National Park, with an area of 361.28 sq. km. and buffer area of the Reserve, the Melghat Tiger Sanctuary, with an area of 788.28 sq. km. The Gavilgarh Fort and Narnala Fort add to the aesthetic values of the area. The visitors to these archaeological monuments enjoy serene forests in the backdrop. The Reserve area has been divided into three zones for management and to strike a balance between the biodiversity conservation and ecologically sustainable community development. Protection and habitat management are the main efforts that are being taken care of along with man-animal conflicts that have been tackled on a priority basis.
