Kanpur: The zoo may soon become proud owner of new variety of animals such as wild dog, star tortoise, white tiger, wolf and pheasants. Kanpur zoo is in an advanced stage of talk with different zoos across the country to get these animals. Under the animal exchange programme, the zoo will get these animals. Kanpur zoo will also have to give a few animals to complete the deal.
A zoo in south India has agreed to give Kanpur zoo two pairs of wild dogs. Matri Bagh zoo in Bhilai will give a pair of white tiger. Allen Forest will also get four-horned antelopes and one pair of star tortoise from Nandan Van zoo in Raipur. From Jaipur zoo, talks are on to get a pair of wolf. Animals such as wild dog, white tiger, antelope are Schedule I categorised animals protected under Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Wild dog will be housed for the first time here.
The zoo has also finalised exchange of animals with Mumbai and Nainital zoos. These zoos will give exotic animals. Mumbai zoo has agreed to give military macau, African grey parrot and night heron to Kanpur zoo, Nanital zoo will give pheasants. These animals will be received in exchange deal. Allen Forest authorities are also making efforts to get wolves to add to the variety of the animals here.
Kanpur zoo director Deepak Kumar said that letter for consent for animal exchange has been sent after a meeting which was held on Thursday.
Zoo vet RK Singh said that talks have materialised with Mumbai and Nainital zoos for getting exotic pheasants. Talks are in advanced stage with Bhilai and Raipur zoos. Wild dog, white tiger, star tortoise are in the wish list of Kanpur zoo,
Talking about wild dog, Singh said that its accuracy in catching prey remains between 90% and 95%.
